Product Formulation and Research
From Nerium’s rediscovery of a natural botanical compound from the Nerium oleander plant and new breakthrough extraction technology, Nerium SkinCare now has the ability to formulate and develop a complete line of skincare product applications for both OTC and natural products. Products with specific targets have been identified and will focus on sun-damaged aging skin, several specific skin diseases, antiviral conditions, and pre-skin cancers.
A new US-based division of Nerium Biotechnology, Inc., Nerium SkinCare has been established for the manufacture and sale of the “first of its kind” natural skincare products for topical use. Nerium SkinCare will utilize Nerium’s new patent-pending extraction technology for its skincare products. This extraction process incorporates pure liquid Aloe Vera to extract the unique Nerium oleander plant components in a way that preserves the unique and beneficial properties of both plants, without any additional solvents. This natural extraction process combines the unique beneficial properties of the Nerium Extract and the known beneficial properties of Aloe Vera, and have allowed Nerium SkinCare to formulate and develop “the first of its kind” skincare products for topical applications.
Research for product safety and application was initiated with Science Toxicology and Technology (ST&T), in San Francisco, California. Dr. Newman has assisted with the ST&T pilot studies by providing safety data from previous studies, experience from a FDA trial ongoing at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the analytical analysis for the determination of oleandrin (CG) in blood plasma.
Utilizing NeriumDerm™, a natural skin repair cream, topical skin studies were performed that included, human spot application to age/liver spots and actinic keratosis, a larger surface area application to acne, and a still larger surface area application for sunburn. In addition, in the acne and sunburn pilot studies, the NeriumDermTM skincare formulation was also tested against well-known products already in the marketplace. Each pilot study included lab analysis of subject blood samples taken for blood chemistry. Test reports indicate the heart rate, blood pressure, blood chemistry and CBC analysis were all non eventful.
With regards to efficacy, ST&T was surprised to find that there was a statistically significant number of subjects which reported reduction in color and size of their age spots in only a 30 day period. With acne, ST&T was surprised to find that a statistically significant number of subjects, 70 percent found the Natural Nerium formulas worked better or the same as the over–the-counter (OTC) product. (Note: the Nerium products contained no added acids or cleansing compounds as did the nationally advertised OTC product). In the sunburn study, ST&T found that more than double the number of subjects who used Nerium Cream experienced better results than the OTC product (40 percent vs. 15 percent respectively), and in addition, it was intriguing that an additional 45 percent of the subjects found the OTC and Nerium products worked the same. This represents a total of 85 percent of the subjects found the Natural Nerium formula worked better or the same as the OTC product. Since the Natural Nerium product contained no “additives” it was not expected that the Nerium product would outperform the OTC product.
In addition, a pilot study utilizing Nerium CSTM, a cold sore relief serum, was performed on cold sores (Herpes Virus – HSV1). The Nerium CSTM formulation for this study was enhanced and included additional compounds in the formulation (Olive leaf, Clove, L-Lysine), known compounds used for this condition. Subjects were required to provide blood samples for blood chemistries. As in previous studies, no adverse reactions were noted; blood analysis showed all subjects within normal ranges. With regard to efficacy, it was found that the Nerium Cream helped promote and speed healing, reduce symptoms, and/or to mitigate and reduce pain and the spreading of skin irruptions or wounds to outside of mouth. The Nerium Cream formulation effectiveness was apparent (faster than or equal to traditional drug therapies).
Continuing research and additional trials for Nerium SkinCare formulations are planned for antiviral cold sore and skin cancer (Basal, Squamous, and Melanoma) studies under a FDA-IND. With the data gathered from all previous pilot studies, Nerium SkinCare believes it will be able to demonstrate safety and have a reasonable expectation of success in a FDA Trial.
