New Cancer Paradigm

Nerium Biotechnology is focusing its research efforts to develop products that conform with the new paradigm for the socially responsible approach to the treatment of cancer as described by the National Cancer Institute.

When he was Director of the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach (currently FDA Director), in speaking about the new paradigm for cancer therapy, stated: “And we tended to think in terms of looking for the silver bullet. In the new paradigm it’s not going to be a silver bullet; there’s not going to be one treatment. There’s going to be a portfolio of treatments tailored for a particular situation and we’re not necessarily always going to completely eradicate cancer but we’re going to control it. And cancer will be thought of more as a chronic disease than an acute disease. So what we’ll see in this crystal ball is our ability to not necessarily completely cure or eradicate but control and suppress and allow someone to live a full rich life and die of some other reason.”  Clinical data gathered from patient experiences demonstrate that Nerium’s flagship product, Anvirzel™, looks to find its place in this new paradigm.

Nerium Biotechnology, Inc., (Nerium) is an international research and development company dedicated to offering solutions that are based on proven science. Nerium’s research and product development has focused on the anti-cancer, anti-viral, and immune-stimulating properties of natural botanical compounds for beneficial use in concert with leading medical research institutions.

From this research, Nerium has rediscovered, identified, and developed a well-defined Nerium Extract from the Nerium oleander plant. Utilizing a proprietary extraction technology, Nerium has been able to extract the active ingredients in a way that preserves the unique components and beneficial properties of this plant. Thus allowing Nerium to develop an ever expanding pipeline of the “first of its kind” Nerium oleander-based products.

Nerium oleander is a known toxic plant that contains cardiac glycosides. Historical use of the Nerium oleander plant for medicinal applications may extend back to Arab physicians in the 8th century and has been reported in ancient texts and folklore for more than 1500 years. The Nerium oleander plant has been used traditionally as folk remedies for a wide variety of maladies and conditions, including abscesses, corns, asthma, dysmenorrheal, eczema, epilepsy, herpes, malaria, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, sores, warts, abortifacients, emetics, diuretics and heart tonics.

Cancer Research
Pharmacology and Development of Nerium oleander-based Cancer Therapy
Cancer research at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has demonstrated that components of Anvirzel™ are active on dual pathways at the cellular level to promote apoptosis and/or autophagy (cell death) in human tumors but not normal cells. This research performed by The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has led to the publication of twelve peer-reviewed journal articles that describe Anvirzel™ (Nerium oleander extract) and its components (oleandrin). These twelve articles present the body of research conducted by Robert A. Newman, Ph.D., as Founder and former Co-Director of New Product Development, Department of Experimental Therapeutics, at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Please note, Dr. Newman has recently retired from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center after 24 years, but remains actively involved in continuing research as Scientific Advisor to Nerium Biotechnology, Inc. In addition, Dr. Newman is currently participating in a FDA Cancer Trial at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center with a Nerium oleander extract in capsule formulation (PBI-05204) sponsored by Phoenix Biotechnology Inc. Skin Cancer Research
As an extension of Dr. Newman’s cancer research, Nerium has completed a study on normal and skin-cancer tissue with the United States division of Asterand in Detroit, Michigan. Asterand, plc is the leading global supplier of high quality, well-characterized human tissue and human tissue-based research services to drug discovery scientists. This research appears to be a compelling reason to move forward with topical cream skin-cancer research and development. Learn more

Research Publications
M. D. Anderson
sponsored research has led to twelve peer-reviewed articles. Within the past ten years there has been a substantial increase in the number of studies reported in peer-reviewed science journals that deal with the effects of cardiac glycosides on the growth of human malignant tumor cells. Our understanding of the spectrum of the pharmacologic activities of cardiac glycosides has increased significantly since the discovery of their effectiveness for treatment of congestive heart failure. It is now recognized that certain cardiac glycosides are involved in complex cell signal transduction mechanisms that may have important consequences in their application to the prevention and/or treatment of malignant diseases. Antiviral Research
M. D. Anderson Sponsored Research Agreement
Nerium continues Nerium oleander-based scientific research under a Sponsored Research Agreement with M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and Dr. Jagannadha Sastry, PhD. Dr. Sastry is the Director of the Virology and Gene Therapy program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Director of Multidisciplinary Research program in Viral Oncology at M. D. Anderson. The research focus has been on the anti-viral properties of Nerium oleander extract on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Learn more

Louisiana State University (LSU) Sponsored Research Agreement
In addition, Nerium continues Nerium oleander-based scientific research under a Sponsored Research Agreement with Louisiana State University (LSU) on the Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1). This antiviral cold sore research is being conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Konstantin (Gus) Kousoulas, Director of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Skin Research
Continuing cancer and antiviral research on the Nerium oleander extract has identified the potential for use of this extract in topical skincare applications. Nerium oleander extract will be the key ingredient in each product and specific targets have been identified. This provides Nerium with the opportunity to develop for the consumer an ever expanding pipeline of the “first of its kind” natural botanical healthcare, topical and OTC skin products.

In addition, Nerium has developed a new technology; a patent-pending extraction process that provides for the formulation of several new enhanced topical skincare products. This extraction technology incorporates pure liquid Aloe Vera to extract the unique Nerium oleander plant components in a way that preserves the unique and beneficial properties of both plants. The result of this process combines the unique beneficial properties of the Nerium Extract with the known beneficial properties of Aloe Vera.

To date several topical skincare product safety and clinical pilot studies have been initiated and completed by Nerium with Science, Toxicology, and Technology (ST&T). ST&T is a product research organization located in San Francisco, California.

Nerium SkinCareThis research has led to the establishment of a new US-based division of Nerium Biotechnology, Inc., Nerium SkinCare. Nerium SkinCare provides for the manufacture and sale of the “first of its kind” natural skincare products for topical use. Nerium Skincare’s products are founded on the technology, core science, and continuing research of Nerium Biotechnology, Inc. Learn more

Farm Operations Research
Nerium’s U.S.-based, environmentally responsible and earth-friendly farming operations provide the raw material for Nerium’s natural botanical extract and product production. Thus Nerium continues to focus on research and testing at the field level. The utilization of natural farming methods and analysis has provided for increased yields, increased oleandrin content, and increased quality of our plant biomass. Our current farming operations are considered all natural, without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and organic farming certification is being considered. Learn more

Immune Research
Nerium research is now expanding on the positive modulation of the immune properties of Nerium oleander extract. This research of an identified immune target, for determining “immunocompetence” in individuals, is expected to open a new arena for future product development.
